This so-called work-life balance that all women are seeking and searching for... I have a secret... it is this myth that someone created several years ago to make us feel like we can do it all, perfectly balanced, and be happy and sane and healthy in the process.
Now I am not saying that you can't be happy and sane and healthy and do it all, but when you go at it from the lens of BALANCE, you, in my opinion, are setting yourself up for failure. Balance, like true, everything is even and gets even attention and takes up even amounts of time type balance, is not a reality in a woman's life, unfortunately.
I spent so many years trying to create a balance- one where I could be mom and wife and entrepreneur all equally amazingly! I failed! But my failure was a blessing in disguise because it allowed me to realize balance is more of a teeter-totter shifting back and forth than a beam that is perfectly balanced no matter what part of the beam I am on.
The teeter-totter has life on one end and business on the other. When you think of it this way, you realize that when you are on the life end of the teeter-totter, that end will carry the weight and not be balanced, and when you are on the working end of it, the same thing there.
I now approach this whole "balance" concept from the lens of is each end of the teeter-totter getting the appropriate and necessary time and attention it needs to not just sit on the ground all the time.
In the last couple of years, I made a shift to create more intentional family time and build my business around that. This has allowed me to feel more in balance with my priorities and my desire for how I want life to look. When I tell people this, they ask if my business has suffered as a result. My response- my business has actually flourished as a result. By taking care of myself and ensuring my cup is full and that my family is cared for and loved, it allows work-focused time to truly be just that which has allowed me to do more in less time than I ever did when I was trying to 'balance' it all out equally.
When you create your business in a way that aligns with your priorities and values, you can create a business that provides for your life without taking away from it. This ladies, is the ultimate goal. I talk a little about this in an article from Shoutout Colorado that you can check out also.
